2023 NJ Indoor Playgrounds- A year in review- collaborations, updates, and looking to 2024

2023 wasn’t looking good for NJ Playgrounds (the website) back in May.

It lay stagnant for quite some time, and was about to be closed down, both Amy and I have moved on from playgrounds, with us parting ways and managing our respective families and careers.

But when it came to actually taking it off the server, I couldn’t do it. I thought let me see if I can update the errors, tech stuff and maybe maybe we can get it to a new place, where we can ultimately let it grow without us.

Practical Me: Wtf are you doing, you have 3 teenagers, and do you know how OLD this site is? It’s not 2011 anymore or 2014, have you seen the google analytics? what are you smoking?

Utopia Me: Yes it’s old I know that, but there was so much time and effort put into it, we have so many memories, and it still gets traffic! Not much anymore, but there is potential and what a great experiment! It would be interesting to figure out how we can get an outdated site working in 2023.

Practical Me: Three words. Sunk Cost Fallacy. Just backup your memories on this USB stick and call it a day. omg how many projects do you have going on right now? And you DO realize that everything takes 10x longer to fix, because of the unknowns. And you know what… you don’t even know a fraction of the unknowns of the unknowns. This was fine when your kids were little and you got something out of it. They are almost out the door. You should probably get a job that will reign you in a bit. I’m getting pretty frustrated with your entrepreneurial squirrel behavior.

Utopia Me: *looks away from squirrel* I hear you. But what if we get a baseline, and turn on google adsense again, and give it 6 months. As long as family comes first, plus existing clients needs are met, I can get the base site working again. Also I can blend in the gaming stuff my teens like into the site as it’s own section.

Practical Me: It’s not like I have a choice, sure fine. Just get the google ads working again. This has to be sustainable. Whether it’s passive income or even family fun for free- I’ll give you six months. And then we need to talk again. Bring data. And ask for help.

Utopia Me: Of course. I’ll get the kids to work on it too. They have a whole summer of interning for me. It will be amazing.

Practical me: Don’t hold your breath. Your summer’s always start with such high expectations. And then you are in September, and it’s like a different world.

Six Months Later:

All systems go!

Back online and can definitely make improvements, but base website works. Have connected with a group of collaborators, and started getting sponsors. Thank you to We Rock The Spectrum- Bergen, The Little Gym- Lodi (stay tuned they are in January) and Imagine That in Florham Park!

So collaborators– this is probably the most important part to rebuilding njplaygrounds the website. We would not be here if it wasn’t for the perspectives and posts from our collaborators. Not just the content itself but the exchange of information, the relationships they have built with play places.

Many of these parents don’t get paid by anyone and although they get some cool places to go for free, we don’t appreciate the time it takes to produce content. So thank you to all our collaborators. Amanda, Diane, Erin, Lisa, Michelle, Play or Nay, Whirl & more.

We look forward to showcasing more content- I wish I could keep up, they have so many outdoor places, I have not been able to schedule yet.

Thanks for allowing us to post your content on our site! Without you this site would have just been archived and stayed in 2016 perpetually. So looking forward to seeing where 2024 takes us 🎉🥳
